Dado Stack Width Calculator

Evidence Level: Level 0 — Theory Lab + Calculation Utility.
This calculator estimates dado width from arithmetic stack width only. It does not verify whether a dado stack is approved, safe, or compatible with any specific table saw.
Use this calculator to estimate the dado width created by two outer blades, chippers, and shims. It helps compare stack combinations against a target dado width, but it does not verify whether a dado stack is approved for your table saw.

How the Calculator Works
A stacked dado set builds width by placing chippers and shims between two outer blades. The calculator adds those component thicknesses and compares the result with your target width.
Formula:
Actual dado width = 2 × outer blade thickness + chipper total + shim total
The calculator searches all possible combinations from your chipper and shim inventory, then sorts by closest match to your target. It uses integer arithmetic internally to avoid floating-point comparison errors that can make two equal values appear slightly different.
Why the Result Is Still Only an Estimate
Even when the arithmetic stacks up correctly, the actual cut width may differ:
- Blade plate thickness and tooth set geometry vary between dado sets and manufacturers
- The dado stack may not cut exactly equal to the arithmetic width
- Wood movement, setup pressure, runout, arbor condition, and test cut measurement can all affect real fit
- Shim arrangements can compress slightly under clamping pressure
Always make a test cut in scrap before cutting final workpieces.
Before Using a Dado Stack
- Check your table saw manual and confirm dado blade diameter limits
- Confirm the maximum dado width your saw allows
- Confirm arbor length and thread engagement
- Use the correct dado throat plate or insert for your saw
- Follow any brake cartridge or safety-system requirements (SawStop, Bosch REAXX, and similar systems have specific dado requirements — see SawStop jobsite saw notes)
- Do not exceed manufacturer limits
- Reinstall normal safety equipment after non-through dado cuts where applicable
This page is not a dado installation guide. Refer to your saw manual and dado set instructions.
